This annual event was held over the weekend of 20th and 21st of September 2025. This event for the past 46 years was mainly held at the Brisbane RNA show ground on the Labour Day long weekend. Due to another booking at the venue a move was necessary. This year the show was held at the Northside Indoor Sport Centre at Zillmere. This provided free parking and cheaper food. Like most things in life, it was not all beer and skittles, moving in and out with one loading platform. Many exhibitors carried their displays/layouts in via the front door. Being basketball courts the area was well lit with stacks of room. Exhibits were placed on carpet tiles to assist with floor protection.
The program showed a
total 78 exhibits made up with 43 layouts, 9 displays, 24 traders and 2
heritage groups. For the QR modeller I feel it was the best ever and had the
promise of even a brighter future.
Cooloolawah depicts both
main line and branch operations of Queensland Railways (QR) broadly set in the
1960/70’s era. A double track mainline is set at the back of the layout
servicing long distance passenger/mail trains and heavy goods. The feature of
the layout is the branch at the front with a small station, through goods shed
and loading ramp.
Stannumvale illustrates standard Queensland Railways (QR) practices of the 1960’s. The layout’s inspiration comes from the old Toowoomba to Wallangarra mainline but has terminating suburban services added to provide variety. The central feature is the impressive arched-roofed Stannumvale Station catering for both mainline and suburban trains. Local industries and a loco depot add further interest and operational activities. HOn3½
“Cloudland” and is a HO scale
animated diorama
depicting the funicular railway that ran from Breakfast Creek Road up to the Cloudland Ballroom (or more correctly, the Brisbane Luna Park). The funicular operates under automated computer control..
Glinvale is a DCC controlled
HO layout running mainly Queensland Railway Locomotives and rolling stock. It
is a compact country layout with a single main line. lt features passing loops,
a cattle loading yard, a goods yard, and a locomotive depot which includes a
turntable, and a two bay engine shed. HO 16.5 mm track.
Scratch Building Queensland Railway
Wooden Wagons
The steam era of QR is attractive because of the large range of classes of wooden wagons. Even within classes, there were large variations. To capture that range especially of one offs, scratchbuilding is a great approach to give individuality to each wagon. What better way to represent wooden wagons than to use actual wooden strips and sheets. Building in wood presents some challenges. Come and discus possible ways to overcome these and achieve a satisfying result.
Craig & Darren will construct a number of structures and kits as well as do some scratch building of detailed items for the layout.
Craig is building the second shed at Park Road.
The ARHSQD is a not-for-profit society, that suits all sorts of railway
enthusiast. We have provided Main Line Rail Tours in the past, and we are
confident of these commencing in the future.
We have a Historical Railway in the foothills of Rosewood, at 57a
Freeman Road Ashwell, which has in the past provided train trips on our
Historical Branch Line, and we will be re-commencing these sometime in late
2025 with current rollingstock. Our museum is open to the public from July
2025, for inspections of the site and the Historic Rollingstock we have. We are always looking for people to help
preserve our past. Our caretaker is on site most days for visits during the
week, but our sales car & refreshment room is only open on Sunday when we
are open to the public. Visit our
website to see when we will recommence Open Days for you to visit. You can come
and see our selection of books, CDs & DVDs that will allow to relive the
days of Queensland Railways. We are more than happy to discuss membership and
opportunities to help at our railway at Rosewood, helping preserve the heritage
of Queensland Railways Past. Ask one of
our friendly volunteers about how you can become a member today. We also
conduct main line steam train trips to locations around Brisbane, and currently
the Society is running trips to Grandchester.
Look at our Facebook Page and watch for future tours. www.arhs-qld.org.au/
Sample of 2800 class Loco and CCH & CCHP wagons. I understand the CCH/CCHP wagons are on the water heading for Australia.
QGR "F" Open wagon. On Saturday he had a number of RTR and kits available for sale, by the time I found out on Sunday they were all gone. After selling all this rollingstock he purchased 27 kits from PGC models, the first kit was assembled and painted before going to bed on Saturday night. Sunday he spent a number of operating session on Amby West. I was able to purchase a couple of body with buffers and decals on Sunday. The last one he had left Sunday afternoon he came across to Amby West and gave it to me. Thanks Alex, much appreciated. All three are now running on Westgate.
On Saturday I did miss the QR Beyer Garratt running on this layout.
This is an N scale layout (1/160th real
size) in which the distance between the rails (the gauge) is 9 mm (hence N for
nine). Although it is not a model of a real location, it is representative of
typical railway scenery in rural Victoria. The sweeping curves and open
countryside featured in the layout are major benefits of modelling in N scale.
Sorry, I did miss a few. Overall I feel it was a very good show and congratulation to AMRA Qld.
I had a ball over the weekend. Great to see some many of you, thank for dropping by and saying good day and putting a face to a name.
Just one more show for the year, yes we are heading down to Rose Hill for another look in a couple of weeks.
Before I close, be sure to check out the latest edition of the Australian Model Railway Magazine. A great article on a QR location to model, The Summit.
So it back to normal life and modelling, things have still been happening in the workshop and we look at that next month.
I have a new computer coming this week, that’s bound to sort me out for a few weeks.
Until next time, enjoy modelling and the hobby, have fun as well.
