GV 18 Guards Van

 

Guards Van GV 18 started off on the rails in 1886, built by Ipswich Workshops for the S & C Railway as a composite carriage. The carriage had a hardwood underframe and a cedar body. Electric light was added in 1926 and a lavatory in 1940 giving the carriage a CL classification. The “List of Coaching Stock” dated the 3^rd January 1963 shows the carriage as a CL. The drawing on the history card shows two first class compartments and one second class compartment.

                                                     (This would may a great model too). 

History card shows the carriage was converted to a Guards Van (GV) without passenger accommodation at Ipswich Workshops on the 14^th March 1963. The van was written of in August 1972.

 GV 176 

Van 172 entered service in 1907 as a composite van, later changed to a second class van and in Aug 1962 was converted to van without passenger accommodation. Finally, the van was written off December 1978. 

The “List of Coaching Stock” dated the 3^rd January 1963 shows 34 “GV” vans that had 32 ft. long bodies fitted with two second class compartments with a total capacity for 20 passengers. Nos are 634, 635, 644, 647, 696, 699, 700, 702 – 713, 716 – 730. 

BGV 964 Converted Suburban car BU to BGV March 1966. Written Off Sep 1988.

 There was also a number of similar vans with just one 2^nd class compartment.

Model:-

The underframe was constructed using plain styrene sheet with Evergreen strip for the sole bars, headstock and bogie bolsters. Couple box were built into the frame with strip. Sides and ends were fabricated from Evergreen scribed sheet with strip being used to add detail.

Queensland Railway Miniatures:- Queen Posts. Brake Hoses.

Tichy Train Group:- Turnbuckles on trust rods.

Kadee:- 158 Whisker couplings. (Bulk Pack – box built into underframe during construction)

Keiran Ryan Models:- Brass wire – Trust rods, hand rails, light brackets etc. (0.3 & 0.4 mm)

North Yard NZ:-  Brass mini Strip for bottom step. (0.25 x 1.5 x 150mm)                            Step Brackets were made from Bostitch 1000 standard staples cut to size.

(Brass wire and mini strip can also be purchased from Andian Models, Sydney).

Decals. Ted Freeman - Toowoomba.

Paint- Body - PGC Scale Models QR Passenger Red,  Underframe- SMS Chassis Black. (Both are Acrylic Lacquer paints that require airbrushing).

Roof and Weathering: Vallejo acrylic (water) Paints. 

Another “shorty” Guards Van to run on Westgate.
